Visit Makanda's Spring Fest the first weekend in May for music, dance, arts and crafts, and food! The Makanda Boardwalk in Makanda, IL, is easily accessed using IL Route 51. Turn at the smily face water tower onto Makanda Road—left if you are heading south from Carbondale; right if you are heading north from Anna. Please use caution, as this area is prone to steep hills and sharp turns, as well as many bicyclers during the summer months. The historic Makanda Boardwalk is home to the Makanda Trading Company, Visions Art Gallery, and The Smelly Hippie, among other unique shops. Grab a refreshing ice cream cone or satisfying sandwich from Makanda Java after your invigorating hike in Giant City.
